about

160 beats per minute, 70s and 80s samples, basketball and a street perspective. After his last year’s debut, Poland-based producer Baby Meelo strikes again with new ideas spawned in the form of Kush, Hoops, Rhymes & Pizza Places EP. The album released by Polish Juke is an experimental journey through rap, footwork, jazz and UK bass. full of hip-hop cuts and sensitivity juxtaposed with raw on-the-block vibes.

Baby Meelo is one Kamil Matyja’s projects - a producer, a DJ, a promoter and a radio host residing in Wrocław, Poland, associated with regime brigade, Polish Juke and Radio LUZ. First results of his input appeared two years ago on the Corner Sofa Bed EP, a compilation released by regime brigade. Next year the same crew presented his solo debut, Milky Wayz EP which introduced and emphasized the notion of an experiment as a way of creating an original fusion of his beloved genres.

Consistent evolution of this peculiar style led to the release date of Kush, Hoops, Rhymes & Pizza Places EP. The 24-minute long material derives rhythmical inspirations from drum and bass and half-time, showcases a unique set of jazz samples and hip-hop cuts corresponding with a natural street feeling. Baby Meelo combines his strong love for rap with footwork tempo and an original interpretation of its seemingly chaotic rhythms. He creates a personal, jungle-driven tribute to the hip-hop culture, including the eponymous rhymes which guide the whole narrative.

What exactly is inside though? Kush, Hoops, Rhymes & Pizza Places was meant to be an album about something. That's why it finally appears as a storytelling composed of a rich palette of samples. Kamil recreates his personal memories, displaying a very expressive and accordingly nostalgic record. There are four title elements hidden in the reconstruction of his late youth feelings. It’s a beautiful story about identity - personal, local and social.
